We went out on our first kayaking trip of the season yesterday. The water level wasn't as high as we would like, but we still had lots of laughs. We started out about 2:30 and barely got started when the clouds got really dark. We turned around and paddled back upstream to where we put in. We had a problem with one side of our inflatable kayak losing air. We finally figured out the problem and fixed it. It looked as though the rain was going around us so we decided to chance it, hoping we wouldn't get rained on the whole 3 hours. So we set out again. During the float we had to get out and pull the kayak over the rocks several times because of the lower level of water. This really tires you out and makes the float longer than it should be, but we were still having fun.
We got about an hour or so away from our destination when we came across friends of ours that were fishing near their house on the bayou. While there we were standing in the rapids outside of the kayak, holding it back from taking off down the water. When I tried to get back in, all of a sudden the rapids (which are very swift) took my feet out from under me and I hit the water hard. It was hard to get back up and get my footing with the water rushing over me (pretty funny huh)? We finally took off again. Before my fall Wayne had gotten out at a low spot to pull me over the rocks, when we got into deeper water he tried to jump in, but cleared the kayak and ended up in the water on the other side, I laughed so hard I thought I was going to fall out myself. You really should have been there.
Our friends told us that on down the water there was a drop off, well if you know me, you know I was getting paranoid at this point. They laughingly told me it was a 10' drop off. Well I was ready to get out of the water at that point and have them drive me to my car. Of course, Wayne wouldn't have that so we took off. As we were nearing the drop off we could hear the falls pretty loud. When we saw the drop off we couldn't figure out where to go off. Our kayak headed pretty much where we didn't need to go, but since we hadn't been there before we were taking Ashley's advice and trying to get to the middle. We came to a dead stop on the edge of the drop off on a solid rock. We worked and worked trying to get over that rock. I was wearing out and we were getting no where. Wayne was going to get out, but the water was so rapid over the edge that he knew if he got me over the rock I was going on without him. He did it anyways and pulled me backwards. When he got back in we tried going to the left, but our kayak went straight back to where we came out of, well this time we went off sideways. We braced ourselves to dump because it was a drop off after all. Well guess what, we stayed in the kayak. We looked at each other and just started laughing, I am still not sure how we kept from tipping over. Again, you should have been there (with a camera).
For our first time out this season, we had a blast. We did get rained on about 3 different times, but we were already wet so it didn't matter and it didn't last but just a few minutes each time. We are hoping for rain so the water level will go back up so we can go out again. If you would like to go with us next time, let us know we have an extra 2 man kayak and would love to take you on the water with us.
