Thursday June 23 I got a call from Wayne while sitting under the hair dryer at the beauty shop, after several minutes of small talk I got the feeling he was trying to tell me something. Finally I asked, "what's wrong" he eventually told me that he was cutting a tree on our property & when it was cut he stepped back to let it fall when all of a sudden out of nowhere another tree landed on the top of his head and drove him to the ground, after being a little fuzzy for a while he finally got up & called me. I told him he needed to go have it checked out because a tree on top of the head can't be good. He refused to go, but did admit that his neck was hurting pretty bad. Of course, he immediately went back to work and continued on as usual.
For days, the kids, his mom & I begged threatened and pleaded for him to go get checked out, but he always refused. On Monday morning the alarm went off at 7:15 & he turned over to get up when all of a sudden I heard him say "oh no" and fall back on the bed. I instantly asked him what's wrong and he didn't answer me, after the 4th time (with me raising my voice) he finally told me that he was really dizzy & the room was spinning & going black. I told him to just lay there for a little while then try again. After several attempts with him continuing to get dizzy I began to worry & decided I needed to get him into my vehicle and head to Little Rock (because I didn't trust anyone at St. Mary's). When I still couldn't get him up I finally called Leanne, who called Ramey who called his dad to come over and help me. I also called our friend Tim Hays, both headed to the house immediately. After trying for a while to get him up, he finally told me to call for an ambulance. We were afraid that he had swelling on the brain or a tiny bleed from the blow to his head & that we probably shouldn't move him without securing his head, so I called.
He stayed at the hospital for 7 hours, which was very scary for me to see him that way. The doctor did a CT Scan on his brain & neck & said it didn't show anything but recommended we follow up with our PCP and get an MRI. He thought the blow knocked something loose in the inner ear. We did an MRI the next morning, when Wayne raised up (with help) from the MRI machine he started blacking out again & the technician caught him before he hit the ground. That test was also clear (he does have a brain....lol) Dr. Monfee concurred with the emergency room doctor and said he will get better in a few days and hopefully he won't ever go through that again, but there was no guarantee. Well here it is 2 weeks to the day of him getting hit and he is still dizzy. He stopped taking the dizzy pills because he convinced himself that they weren't helping & was causing his stomach to be upset. I knew it was just a matter of time before he quit taking them. If he is still dizzy by Monday we are going to go back to the doctor & possibly an ENT doctor that has a procedure to fix the inner ear problem.
All said and done, this has been a scary 2 weeks for me. Wayne has been my rock since I was 16 years old and to see him vulnerable laying on a stretcher helpless really upset me. He has always been the one to take care of me & the kids, so strong and capable of taking care of everything no matter what it was. Loving us & protecting us and here he lay. I will admit I cried myself to sleep that night when I went to bed & prayed for God to take care of him. I hope we never have to go through anything like that again, but if we do I know God is there & he loves us & he answers prayers. I am thankful for all my family & friends that have prayed for Wayne & came by the hospital & all the offers of help, most of all I am thankful that God heard those prayers.
